Landing a Literary Agent as a Law Professional

Literary agents are always seeking professionals, like attorneys, to represent. Why is that? Because attorneys are highly revered people of our society. Not only that, but attorneys scream credibility which is incredibly important to an agent. If you've established your credibility through your educational background, wins and white papers, you'll be that much more likely to landing a publishing deal.

There are so many attorneys out there who always have the idea in the back of their head to become a writer, however, few ever take the opportunity to actually do it. They may blame a busy work schedule, family responsibilities or general exhaustion as an excuse, but those who have given writing a chance, have often come out on top. David Baldacci and John Grisham are just two examples of successful attorneys-turned-authors who have created new ground in the publishing industry. The first thing you should do, if serious about becoming a writer, is to read other attorneys works. Do you have something to offer that differs from the other works currently out by Attorneys? Is it a fresh new consumer-friendly law book? Is it a new legal-horror novel mix? Have you gone to extensive measures to do research for an upcoming work? Only you know what makes you stand out, but finding that special something is critical in writing a successful book.

The second thing you should do is obvious—write a great book! Guess what? There are existing professionals out there who work with aspiring authors in the publishing industry to moonlight on their work. Attorneys are busy people, everyone knows that, but you have to set aside the time to write if you're serious about getting your work published. You can't let your busy schedule deter you from accomplishing your dream. Whether it's 30 minutes at night before jumping into bed, or an hour in the morning before the wife and kids are up and starting their days, finding the time in your schedule to write is the only way you'll get that book written and done.

Even better, if you're writing a nonfiction book, you don' have to write the entire manuscript. You only need to write a strong book proposal and let the publishing company pay you to write the entire book. How great is that?
